Three ways to get a website
- Do it yourself on a website builder: a monthly subscription plus your own time. Cheapest to start, but the time is real and the site lives on the builder’s platform.
- A template site from an agency or freelancer: a ready-made design filled with your content. Quicker and cheaper than custom, but it looks like other sites using the same template.
- Custom-coded: designed and built for your business. Usually faster to load and more flexible, and it costs more to build than a template.
What moves the price
- How many pages, and who writes the words
- Online payments or a full store
- Booking, estimate or quote modules
- Connections to other tools, such as your calendar, CRM or email
- Tracking for calls and forms, so you can see which ads work
The costs after launch
Ask about these before you compare build prices, because they add up over the years:
- Domain renewal each year
- Hosting, and whether the price changes after the first year
- Changes after launch: included, monthly plan, or quoted per job
- GST: whether it’s included in the quote
Five questions to ask any web designer
- Who owns the domain, the hosting account and the code?
- Can I move the site to another developer later, and what do I get when I do?
- What will hosting cost after the first year?
- How much do changes cost after launch?
- Is the price fixed and written down before work starts?
